if you wondered whether the society would print blood cards this year, they won't.
blood cards are out.. consider the box found on the december km, entitled "new provision to assist us to abstain from blood".
the governing body has approved combining the essential elements of the durable power of attorney (dpa) document and the advance.
Durable power of attorney is a very serious power to give to someone else. The only time it is enforceable is when you are incapacitated. Once you are incapacited, it is irrevocable. WTBTS has figured out another way to be free from liability in these matters, as corporations just don't hold DPA over other's individual health care decisions. This really sucks for the people who take on this power, because they are now liable for their decisions. If they knew they could be sued (and have to pay for a defense), do you think they would still agree to be someone else's DPA? This is a HUGE move to make WTBTS judgment proof for the unconscionable policies, but still keep their control over the R&F.
I will have to tell my father about these, so that he can tell my mom not to become anyone else's DPA in the congregation.

they keep coming!
and coming!
and coming!
They are frequenting your home a lot right now to see if you put holiday decorations. They all want to be the first to turn you in, that's how they get Armageddon points. Just relax, don't answer the door, and know that after New Year's they'll lose interest. You'll start to wonder if they ever really did care about you. (Don't answer that, you won't like the answer.)
Happy Hanukkah

(Edited to add: Avi, you're bad...have you been a bit of a disappointment lately?)
after leaving a controlling sect, it?s normal to want to live ?freedom?.
what did you do to show that you were no longer under the influence of the watchtower?
did you grow a beard, start having sex with whoever, start drinking, start gambling?
1) Enrolled full time in college (got bachelors degree, got teaching certificate, got real job in a real career)
2) Registered to vote (and voted, first time was for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 California Primary, I have not missed a single election day since.)
3) Stayed out all night (sometimes at rock concerts, sometimes just at friends' houses because it was too late to drive home)
4) Travelled with boyfriends (Canada, Europe, Mexico, Hawaii)
5) When my mom took my witness brother and his wife to Hawaii, my Jewish boyfriend and I put a big fat Christmas tree in her front room, so anyone driving by could see it (OK, my mom had to take crap for that, but she never "excluded" me on a "fun family trip" after that.)
6) Still haven't smoked, been stoned or drunk. (Have no clue what I am waiting for, on the other hand, if I made it this long without, why bother?)
7) Went to other religious services, churches and synagogues (and was) never once struck by lightening.)
8) Was able to become financially secure at a very young age (thanks to getting a college education), without pressure and guilt for having and achieving a perfectly noble and healthy goal.
9) I contribute both time and money to charities and important causes (even some that are founded by other religions, by the government or politcal parties).
10) I associate with, and fall in love with whomever my little heart desires, regardless of what religion they are (some are even without religion!!!).
I sure was a bad, rebellious, cursed, doomed, evil, wretched soul. When they try to scare the youngsters into staying in the cult, they hold up my picture, for sure... My disassociation was a sure fire recipe for my eternal suffering and damnation.

our 8-year-old son, jackson, is exhibiting the following symptoms:.
* disorganized (unfortunately, this has kind of been since birth but more pronounced now).
* hard to concentrate.
Nina,
Your poor little guy, he's probably a little frustrated with himself too. If he can get into TV or a video game, he probably isn't ADD/ADHD in the classic sense. The kids I teach that are truly ADD/ADHD, can't even do TV or video games for longer than five or ten minutes unless they are medicated. (I can tell the difference between the real ones and the ones whose parents are just fed up because their child is high energy. And there is a dramatic difference.)
Here are my opinions/suggestions. First, he is only eight. For some little ones, it takes years to learn how to focus for longer than five or ten minutes a shot. (Some experts suggest that TV and video games delay or prevent the development of this skill, I'm more inclined to agree than disagree, but I haven't read any studies myself).
Second, he is on a number of medications. Investigating all the potential side effects-and at this particular age- may shed some light on some of his troubles. If you find this may be the cause, perhaps changing the time medicines are taken can help with the sleep troubles, or tiredness, or lack of focus. Your doctor might suggest reducing dosages, or changing the schedule. Talk to her. (Actually, if I were the parent, I would do this first.)
Third, absent any clear cause of a "stomach ache" (like eating the wrong thing, the flu, motion sickness, the meds) they are usually a symptom of stress in children. If they just started or became more frequent this school year you can reasonably link it to something with his new class this year. It doesn't mean something wrong is happening, it might just mean that he is having trouble adjusting. If this is the case, listen to his tales of his days, he likely won't know what it is, but he'll be giving you clues as he talks to you. It could be something so simple as the teacher's rule about getting a drink, or using the restroom, or something more serious, like a kid teasing him.
Fourth, I have never heard of any child that actually responded to a diet change. This does not mean it doesn't work. As teachers, we are taught NOT to make any dietary suggestions to parents concerning their children (a big no-no). We all know the sweets and sodas make the kids bounce off the walls (no duh). Some schools have rules about goodies kids can bring to school. There are all these suggested diets for kids with different "problems."
I had a cousin that had to have his diet monitored closely or he would turn into a whackadoo. It would happen pretty quickly after he ate stuff he wasn't supposed to. It was easy to figure out what the food items were. Unfortunately part of being a kid is eating all that junk. You can watch it when he is around you, but you can't control what his friends might share with him when you aren't around. I understand that for the real effects to start to show, the diet/nutrition thing is a long term proposition. (One of my classmates in law school is ADD/ADHD and he had to give up refined sugar completely-months before classes started-to get his body chemistry ready. He's also on meds. He said they don't work if he has sugar in his diet.)
Fifth, since he seems to be holding it together academically, hold off on any special services testing until you can rule out side effects from the medicines, and see if he can get a bit more sleep (lack of sleep is actually a really big deal, it reduces immunity, energy, ability to focus, perform, retain, and just generally cope).
He sounds like a sensitive boy, if something is troubling him it could be causing nearly all these symptoms you described. You will figure this out. You're a good mommy.
Take care, Shoshana
my son is in a school for smart kids.
they call it "challenge".
he is in 2nd grade, just turned 8 last month.
Dear Princess-
I like that spelling list, because the words are muliple-syllable, but mostly phonetic, which means that the words aren't impossible, but will challenge young but bright minds. I remember second and third grade spelling lists (yes, I remember that crap-I not only remember what I was taught but how I was taught it) and that capitalization was part of the deal. Proper nouns got capitlized, common nouns didn't. We ALWAYS had a pretest early in the unit and the post test at the end of the unit.
I am surprised, though, that here it is nearly November, and this is the first time this matter came up for your child. Whether he had a brain fade (gee, that NEVER happens with gifted 8 year olds) or the teacher has a pedagogy (or other) problem, is probably irrelevant. I have seen many a teacher treat students unfairly, only to make it worse when a parent comes to the defense. Try to tread carefully, since it appears this teacher already has a "particular opinion" about your child. I'm a high school teacher, and when we get together with the elementary teachers for union and district stuff, it never ceases to amaze me how petty, vindictive and close-minded the elementary teachers (as a group-not individually) can get. (Yes, that is a sweeping generalization, but you should hear how they have it in for certain kids-not because of the kid but because the parent is making life miserable for them.)
I have also seen parents overreact to little things, turning very minor inconsistencies or apparent inequities into federal cases. It puts teachers in a very defensive place, causing a disruption to classroom environment (can't be helped-teachers are human). I hope this is as bad as it gets for your child, because the good news is that it's not so bad, and no college or future employer will want to know whether your child forgot capitalization rules in second grade.
Have him retake the spelling test for you, give him the perfect score he'll earn, and put that one on the fridge instead. The learning continues at home, anyway right?

in the watchtower november 15, 2004 article "the tent of the upright ones will flourish" pg 28, the old policy of "theocratic warfare" is freshly confirmed.. remember that in us courts (a principle that mosts for most of the world's courts), a witness swears to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
" it is recognized that withholding information would be the equivalent of lying or perjury.. what are jws instructed to do?
my comments are in red.the faithful witness does not commit perjury when testifying.
No such luck, Scully. My mom is no dummy. She knows I would have only ulterior motives for having any WT literature. And she is right. She is very much an avid adherent to the notion of not casting one's pearls before the piggies.

i was asked to fill in on our local school board as an elected board member could not finish their turn.
i thought about for a day and decided to do it.
it requires that you are a registered voter, at least in our town, which i am.
Not for being appointed. Not for registering to vote...If there were two witnesses that you actually voted, you are toast. But then again, they would probably consider accepting this post as an act of disassociation....
Oh, to get the local rag to send a reporter to the meeting when they announce it, and then for you to be able to tell the whole community why. Nothing like this sort of thing to get those active in the local scene all aflutter right smack dab in the middle of election season.
Most small local newspapers thrive on this kind of scandal (school board drama has always played big in every district I've worked.)
Sounds fun, can I watch?

I anticipate that I will be practicing family law once I pass the bar (on the first try, of course), and that I will be called upon by my colleagues in the field to handle some of the diffi "cult" portions of cases involving JWs (there seem to be more and more of them in my area).
I am definitely going to acquire this WT, for use in situations of cross examination of JW parties, experts and children.
I wonder if it would be a violation of any legal ethics (I haven't taken Professional Responsibility yet) if I stole this issue from my mom's house. Otherwise I need to go to the mall and pick it up from the zombies that look afraid if you look like you are about to talk to them.

jehovah, his word, and his organization.
jehovah, moses and his chosen people.
jehovah, the aaronic priesthood and his chosen people.
Well, keeping in mind that the JW "history" is ever-so-slightly slanted to preview the whole Jesus thing. I think most Christian religions use the same bent. Sometimes I have to stop and think, Truthseeker, how much I understand of my "Jewish History" is colored by the JW painting of it. They take all of the Bible, mistranslate it, take it out of context, and only consult outside sources on interpretation when it suits whatever mind control tachnique they are currently practicing. The real connection between the JW "history" to which you refer is the need for the "organization" or a "channel" to God.
Not so with the early Jews. Looking at all that leadership in the early history of the Jews as "mediation" isn't exactly Jewish. Think of some of the prominant non-priestly figures, like Jonah, Miriam, Ruth, Naomi, Esther (yeah, I know, there are more, but I have con law on the brain). That form of worship, devotion and loyalty was not accomplished through the "mediator" of the day, but by dint of their own determination.
And anyway, those "sacrifices" were promptly followed by fabulous barbecue (of the recently sacrificed animals) (Baruchu...) and days on end of partying. When did that ever happen in JW style "worship." Maybe things would have been different for me had that been the case: Say the blessing, butcher the cow, barbecue the beast and get down to the real business of hanging out at a festival, eating, drinking, singing, dancing, buying and selling trinkets and goodies, and generally celebrating freedom...
